The study deals with facet slopes on the periphery of the Malá Fatra and Vysoký Javorník mountains. Geomorphological analysis arrived at the conclusion that the slopes of the Malá Fatra Mts. are fault scarps and the Malá Fatra Mts. represent a typical young horst. The slopes of the Vysoký Javorník Mts. are presumably fault line scarps.

J. Feranec, J. Oťaheľ: Mapping of land cover at scale 1:50 000: draft of the nomenclature for the Phare countries. Geografický časopis, 51, 1, 1999
The study documents the nomenclature proposal of the 4th level (scale 1:50 000) created based on the proposals of specialists from Bulgary, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Rumania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Three dominating traits of objects of the land cover objects: size of identified object, morphostructural and physiognomic characteristics, and territorial (national) particularities of the landscape objects were admitted while creating this nomenclature.

Signing of geographical objects and phenomenon by the map signs is often accompanied by use of inadequate expressing means and approaches which cause errors in interpretation. Map signing pursues either the principle of arbitrariness (non-motivation) or similarity (associativenes, motivation). The principle of associativeness is important also if the computers are used. The rules of associativeness which are recommended to observe in application of this principle are quoted and accompanied by examples of disrespect for the mentioned rules.

J. Šútor, Š. Rehák: Quantification of the water storage in the soil aeration zone of the Žitný ostrov. Geografický časopis, 51, 1999, 1, 8 figs., 6 tabs., 16 refs.
The presented study is dedicated to assessment of water storage in unsaturated zone of soils of the natural environment of Žitný ostrov as the water resource supplying the vegetation cover. The method used for calculation is based in existing information on classification of soil types in the region, depth of soil or thickness of its non-aquiferous layer, depth of the ground water level and on an independent procedure of assessed point characterising the moisture-retentive lines of single soil classes. The quoted comparison was made to confirm applicability of the used methodology.

problems connected with the estimates of the values of hydrological response while applying the results of hydrogeographical regional typification and division of the territory of Slovakia to a network of small catchments which can fulfill the function of classified objects for the purposes Slovakia°s hydrogeographic regional typification. The study defines the general principles applied in creation of the network and then the result of their application is presented, followed by analysis of problems, which sprang while creating the network in the consequence of application of general principles.

J. Hanušin: Typification of runoff regime on example of a set of chosen catchments of Slovakia. Geografický časopis, 51, 1999, 1, 6 figs., 6 refs.
A set of 166 selected river catchments is analysed from the viewpoint of runoff regime. Monthly means from 20 year observation period (1976-1995) were assessed. Months with maximum, months with minimum runoff and coefficient of variation of mean monthly discharge within a year were chosen as criteria. Assessment of the month with maximum or with the minimum runoff was the decisive criterion for assessment of the type. Size of the variation coefficient determines the ratio of variation, which in turn, is a criterion for classification of a subtype of runoff regime. Finally five basic types and eleven subtypes of runoff regime were identified.
