ASSESSING THE ACCURACY OF AIRPHOTO INTERPRETATION: THE EXAMPLE OF FARMS, HOUSES AND RURAL ROADS

Dick van der Zee

D. van der Zee: Assessing the accuracy of airphoto interpretation: the example of farms, houses and rural roads. Geografický časopis, 51, 1999, 2, 7 figs., 4 tabs., 7 refs.

The assessment of the accuracy of airphoto interpretation is not a simple matter. This is illustrated by a number of case studies dealing with the interpretation of farms, houses and rural roads. Right or wrong can be a relative question. In addition it can be viewed from two different points: number of interpreted objects found to be correct in reality or number of objects in reality that have been correctly interpreted. A number of different aspects is related to accuracy, of which reliability of the identification appears to be the most essential one. The influence of the skill and experience of the interpreter and the scale of the airphotos used on the accuracy of the interpretation can be great. If not point objects but line or area objects are concerned, the expression of accuracy in number of objects correctly interpreted may not be satisfactory. The percentage of correctly interpreted area or length may be more relevant. It is also important to analyse and quantify the type of misinterpretations.

Key words: airphoto interpretation, accuracy of interpretation, reliability of identification

AN ATTEMPT TO EVALUATE SNOW METHAMORPHOSIS ACCORDING TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS IN THE CHOCHOLOWSKA VALLEY (WEST TATRA MOUNTAINS)

Ewa Lupikasza, Leszek Litwin

E. Lupikasza, L. Litwin: An attempt to evaluate snow methamorphosis according to environmental conditions in the Chocholowska Valley (West Tatra Mountains). Geografický časopis, 51, 1999, 2, 6 figs., 5 tabs., 10 refs.

This paper discusses problems of seasonal snow cover metamorphosis. An attempt was made to evaluate snow cover metamorphosis according to environmental and meteorological conditions at five sites in the Chocholowska Valley in winter seasons 1994/95 and 1995/96. The physical parameters of snow (density, hardness, snow temperature) were measured and the descriptions and photographs of snow profiles and snow crystals were prepared. An attempt was made also to reconstruct the history of development of individual snow layers in the snow profiles.

ŠTRUKTÚRA VOLEBNÝCH PREFERENCIÍ OBYVATEĽOV NAJVÄČŠÍCH MIEST SLOVENSKA

Peter Mariot

P. Mariot: Structure of electoral preferences of population of the largest towns of Slovakia. Geografický časopis, 51, 1999, 2, 6 figs., 9 tabs., 11 refs.

Results of the 1998 elections to the National Council of the Slovak Republic are analysed. At the level of districts regions with above average and below average support given to HZDS (Fig. 1), SDK (Fig. 2), SDĽ (Fig. 3), SMK (Fig. 4), SNS (Fig. 5), and SOP (Fig. 6) are described in detail. Attention is paid also to the rate and structure of political preferences of population of the towns of Slovakia with more than 10 thousand inhabitants. Combining the dominating political subjects (which together obtained more than 50% of votes) eleven types of towns (Tab. 3) are described in detail. The types containing at least five towns of Slovakia (Tabs. 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) are separately presented. Finally the structure of the dominating political subject in study towns is compared with the one of the dominating subjects within the districts they are part of.

MODELY VODNEJ ERÓZIE PÔDY A ICH APLIKÁCIE NA SLOVENSKU

Jaroslav Hofierka, Marcel Šúri

J. Hofierka, M. Šúri: Water erosion models and their applications in Slovakia. Geografický časopis, 51, 2, 1999, 64 refs.

The paper brings an overview of the state-of-the-art in soil water erosion modelling with a focus on physically-based models. Raster-based geographic information systems (GIS) are the most appropriate for distributed modelling. GIS tools can be applied in all stages of the soil erosion project but one of their most important advantages are possibilities of considering spatial and temporal patterns of erosion/deposition processes. Basic characteristics of empirical and physically-based erosion models are discussed. Data sources used for deriving model input parameters are identified and evaluated, namely topographic and thematic maps, field measurements/mapping and remote sensing. Attention is also given to erosion modelling activities in Slovakia.

VÝSKYT A ROČNÉ ROZDELENIE MINIMÁLNYCH PRIETOKOV NA SLOVENSKÝCH TOKOCH

Anna Grešková

A. Grešková: Occurrence and year distribution of the low flows on the Slovak streams. Geografický časopis, 51, 1999, 2, 2 tabs., 9 refs.

The article deals with the subject of low flows of the Slovak streams. Occurrence and the year distribution of the low flows is analysed on a set of 157 basins, chosen from the digital network of small basins of Slovakia, with available database of the hydrological and physical/geographical characteristics.

Key words: minimum discharge, low flow, distribution of low flow in a year, digital network of small basins, types of distribution of low flow in a years.

TENDENCIE VÝVOJA A PRIESTOROVÁ DIFERENCOVANOSŤ UBYTOVACÍCH ZARIADENÍ V BRATISLAVE

Ingrid Bučeková

I. Bučeková: Development tendencies and spatial differentiation of accommodation facilities in Bratislava. Geografický časopis, 51, 1999, 2, figs., 3 tabs., 17 refs.

Paper documents rapid expansion of tourist and accommodation function in Bratislava, the capital of Slovak Republic, after 1989. Achieved level of accommodation facilities network in Bratislava is compared to selected cities in Slovakia, and to the capital cities of neighbouring post-communist states. Specific features concerning location factors of hotel type accommodation facilities are analysed in relation to the urban functional structure of Bratislava. Differences between local location factors in contrast to the general model of hotel location in urban space are explained.
