J. Urbánek: Geomorphic analysis: search for a system. Geografický časopis, 52, 2000, 3, 1 fig., 23 refs.
The study criticizes high degree of synthetic and semantic uncertainty of geomorphic notions. It outlines geomorphic analysis as a sequence of steps consisting of identification, differentiation, and systemization, which gradually remove this drawback. Analysis is concluded by construction of a system of hypotheses and discovery of objective laws.

J. Jakál: Extreme geomorphic processes in karst. Geografický časopis, 52, 2000, 3, 3 figs., 14 refs.
The paper analyses the origin and significant properties of extreme geomorphic processes in karst relief. Criteria for delimitation of territory threatened by the above-mentioned processes are set leaning on the recognition of the surface of karst by the methods of geomorphic research and the particular developmental stage of underground cave systems by the methods of speleological research. Causes of origin and acceleration of the onset of extreme geomorphic processes are identified. Attention is paid to forms of collapse of cave-ceilings provoked by natural gravitational processes and to collapses of the karst surface provoked by anthropic activity, gravitational collapse of blocks in high mountains, debris avalanches, and flooding of cave systems, which occurred in the karst of the Western Carpathians

A. Ivan, K. Kirchner, O. Krejčí: The morphostructural features of the Moravian part of the Western Carpathians and Pannonian Basin. Geografický časopis, 52, 2000, 3, 38 refs.
In the paper main morphostructural features of the Western Carpathians and Pannonian Basin in Moravia are discussed in the light of their recent geological research. The different basement of the Bohemian Massif on contacts with the Eastern Alps (Moldanubicum) and the Western Carpathians (Brunovistulicum) have influence on configuration of megamorphostructures as well as on the type and intensity of basement remobilization under Outer Western Carpathians. Special attention is given to: a) double grabens in the contact area of the Bohemian Massif and Carpathian Foredeep (the Upper Moravian Graben as example), b) formation of the flysch nappes, c) young uplifted very heterogenous block of the Middle Moravian Carpathians, d) problems of planation surfaces and their preservation, e) complex structure of the Bílé Karpaty nappe and problem of relief inversion in the Bílé Karpaty Mts., f) the young pull–apart structure of the northern part of the Vienna Basin.

A. Michálek: Poverty: concepts and geographic dimensions. Geografický časopis, 52, 2000, 3, 1 figs., 15 refs.
Although poverty also existed in time of socialism in the transforming countries of Central and Eastern Europe, it became more acute after the political and economic changes. The aim of the study is to provide a survey of the most recent and most important facts on poverty, notions and way of measurement with emphasis on its spatial dimensions. The study, apart of synthesis of the knowledge on concepts (methods) of measurement, also evaluates their applicability in observation of spatial distribution of poverty. Part of the study is a survey of literature on poverty in Slovakia, which in some way treated its spatial aspect (dimensions). The study also observes the common traits typical for the existing (identified) regions of poverty in Slovakia and contains criteria applied for the choice of concepts and indicators for research of spatial dimensions of poverty.

J. Szőllős: Regional stability of electoral support of selected political parties in Slovakia, 1990-1998. Geografický časopis, 52, 2000, 3, 15 figs., 6 tabs., 12 refs.
The aim of this paper is to identify regions of electoral support of the main political parties in Slovakia and to evaluate the regional stability of this support. The influence of the change in electoral districts on the regions of electoral support is also examined. In this study results of four parliamentary elections held in Slovakia in 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1998 are considered and compared. Five political subjects in Slovakia are selected, namely HZDS (Movement for the Democratic Slovakia), SDL (Party of the Democratic Left), SDK (Slovak Democratic Coalition), SMK (Hungarian Coalition Party), and SNS (Slovak National Party). Using the method elaborated by Jehlička and Sýkora, regions of support of these political parties are identified and analyzed. The findings of this analysis suggest that regional differences in political party support have emerged in spite of the short history of parliamentary democracy in Slovakia.

P. Podolák: Geographic and demographic characteristics of Gypsy population in Slovakia. Geografický časopis, 52, 2000, 3, 3 figs., 7 tabs., 27 refs.
The study deals with main geographic and demographic characteristics of Gypsy population in Slovakia. It provides basic orientation in problems of statistical registration of this population, as well as in discrepancies existing in long-term records of Gypsies. Attention is paid to historic aspects of demographic behaviour of Gypsies in relation to the majority population of the Slovak Republic – distinct differences in age structure, fertility and birth rates. Based on accessible statistic data, the essential characteristics of spatial distribution of Gypsy population in Slovakia are analyzed. Taking into account the high rate of population growth and young age structure of Gypsy population, it is shown that accumulation of problems in the economic and social areas can be expected.

Z. Finková: Statistical data on nationalities and Gypsies. Geografický časopis 52, 2000, 3, 2 refs.
In this brief note some problems concerning the sources of statistical data on the size and structure of Gypsy population in Slovakia are reviewed and discussed. Special attention is devoted to validity, consistence and completeness of this information.
