The essence of the uniqueness of the ethnic situation of any minority
lies in the fact that from the first moment of their existence
in a new land, certain processes begin to take effect in the development
of the members of a minority group, processes for which two basic,
yet mutually contradictory, tendencies are symptomatic. One of
these symptoms is marked by the expressive characteristics of
ethnocultural survival and most distinctly is manifested in the
clinging to of cultural values established in the original homeland,
that is, in the preservation of the signs of original cultural
and ethical uniqueness. The second tendency is marked by ethnocultural
changes and cultural assimilation with the majority population
with which the minority attaches its destiny.
