A study by means of empirical research at farms in the surroundings of the villages of Topoľníky and Okoč in the district of Dunajská Streda traces the phenomenon of poverty in the closer scale of the micro-environment of the present day Slovak countryside. It endeavours to diagnose poverty in everyday life, as manifested in material and social deprivation. It uses the classic ethnological method used in research on small communities, that is the collection of interviews and biographies of individuals and families.

PhDr. Soňa Kovačevičová, DrSc.,

It looks at the circumstances in which certain cultural phenomena came to Slovakia and in a wider sense to the territory of the old Kingdom of Hungary. The author leaves the problem of the circumstances and time, that they became part of folk culture for further research.

THE SONG TRADITION OF THE GERMANS IN MEDZEV

PIESŇOVÁ TRADÍCIA NEMCOV V MEDZEVE

Hana Urbancová,
Ústav hudobnej vedy SAV, Dúbravská cesta 9, 84105 Bratislava, Slovakia

Medzev (Ober- and Untermetzenseifen) originally belonged to the system of German mining towns in the lower Spiš region of Slovakia. It developed in an independent way and became the centre of the so-called „Manták" micro-region, in which elements of the culture of the lower Spiš Germans, and at the same time crystallized some of its own specific features. These were formed both in orientation towards nearby Hungarian speaking territory and in wider Central European contacts. Medzev represented an open type of culture of a small town with a craft tradition and activities of a numerous group of local intelligentsia. The remnants of the German song repertoire are a reflection of a dynamic development with the continuity of some more archaic phenomena. The coexistence of oral and written forms of tradition is characteristic of the song culture. This influences the genre structure and form of interpretation. The symbiosis of folk, semi-folk and composed creative works was the result of a search for cultural and ethnic identity in the minority environment.

AN ATTEMPT AT AN ENERGETIC-INFORMATION INTERPRETATION OF SOME MAGIC-MEDICINAL PRACTICES IN THE TRADITIONAL FOLK CULTURE OF SLOVAKIA

POKUS O ENERGETICKO-INFORMAČNÚ INTERPRETÁCIU NIEKTORÝCH MAGICKÝCH LIEČEBNÝCH PRAKTÍK V TRADIČNEJ ĽUDOVEJ KULTÚRE SLOVENSKA

Mgr. Dušan Belko,
Ústav etnológie SAV, Jakubovo námestie 12, 813 64 Bratislava, Slovakia

The author analyses some representative examples from the field of ethno-medicine. He points especially to a certain agreement between magic-medical procedures preserved in the traditional folk culture of Slovakia, which developed in the course of many generations and originate from times when official science and medicine practically did not exist and the procedures of biotherapy _ of a helpful therapeutic method, helping on the energetic-information level of the body. The paper also mentions the accessible literature on the given problem as well as the theoretical-methodological starting point of a possible new approach to the study of magic phenomena. This approach is based on an energetic-information interpretation of the given phenomena and provides interested persons and researchers in this area with a particular, clearly not the only view of traditional knowledge, which was placed in the category of irrational ideas in Slovak ethnology up to now.
